Guy West Bridge restoration getting started
The City is starting work next week to repair and repaint the Guy West bike and pedestrian bridge over the American River near CSU-Sacramento. The bridge will remain open with a narrower bridge path during the project except for a limited number of weekend closures that will be publicized in advance. The project will be finished by the end of 2014.
The bridge provides direct access to bicyclists to the parkway and is also the primary access route between the Campus Commons neighborhood and the university.
The Guy West Bridge is one of the few replicas of the Golden Gate Bridge. The restoration project will include new paint of the original color– International Orange – and restoration of suspension cables and rope connections, bridge deck and railing maintenance, and structural frame repairs that collectively will ensure the continued safe performance of the bridge. See the project webpage for more information.
The City is committed to keeping the bridge open as much as possible, but lead paint removal will require at least four weekend closures from Friday at 6 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m. All weekend closures will be publicized in advance through signage and on theCity’s traffic alerts webpage.
During all closures, bicyclists and pedestrians will be directed to use the H Street bridge. There will also be work concurrently taking place on the levees by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that will require a longer detour via Campus Commons to the H Street Bridge if the levee work overlaps with a Guy West Bridge closure.
