Hawk lovers came together Saturday morning to see Swainson’s close up and to walk along the river bank on a hawk quest. All comers were satisfied.
Local Naturalist, Robert Sewell, guided a group of more than fifty to spy on the Swainson’s hawk. The group crunched down the gravel on the levee. The birdwatchers stopped and set up scopes about a half mile from Sutter’s Landing. Kestrels, red tails, great horned owl chicks and the Swainson’s, stared back from the tree branches.
The California Raptor Center was on hand with live Swainson’s Hawks to demonstrate the birds and answer questions.
Friends of the Swainson ’s hawk, Sacramento Audubon Society, Friends of the River Bank, and Save the American River Association were the sponsors.
