Sacramento Police Department Update on Metal and Catalytic Converter Thefts

We have been working hard recently on metal theft.  As we continue to try to address this problem I would ask that you watch out for your neighbors and your community.  If you see someone around street lights or electrical boxes please call the police immediately.  We have had a rash of thefts to street lights, with criminals removing all of the copper wiring.  It is an enormous expense to the community when the City has to come out and re-wire the lights.

Additionally, we continue to work on the theft of Catalytic Converters (a piece of the exhaust system in all cars).  We are in talks with a major oil change company.  The plan will be that you will be able to take your car to the business and they will etch your license plate onto the catalytic converter.  This will be a significant deterrent to the thief and will allow us to track the item back to the victim if we locate them at a scrap metal dealer.  We will let you know when this program is up and running.

Sorry about your situation, Elaine. I’ve got an email into SPD for an update. I’ll post it as soon as I hear.

I am the Neighborhood Watch captain for Windward/Steamboat and Starboard Ways in the Pocket/Greenhaven area. One of our neighbors, Tom Hill at 455 Windward Way just reported to me the theft of the catalytic converter from his Toyota Tundra truck on Sunday night. The truck was parked in his driveway.
I hope the program with local oil change companies to assist in etching CDL numbers on people’s catalytic converters will help stall this problem.
With such a valuable commodity as platinum there must also be a black market for this.
I will encourage our neighbors to be vigilant and take the precautions they can.

I am also interested in knowing when the program to etch the license plate onto the catalytic converter is up and running. My catalytic converter was the target last night or early this morning. My Toyota was parked in my driveway in the S. Land Park neighborhood, just on the edge of Pocket area. I will be talking to my neighbors today and also my landlord. Just this past Sunday had reported to Police depart. of a suspicious person in neighborhood knocking on our door asking to use our telephone and that they where a relative of my neighbor who got locked out of the house. Needless to say I did not let that person in and that person even tried my doorknob to open my security screen door. Which was locked . That person continued down the street trying the same thing to a few other homes. I’m not sure what the outcome was but the police did drive by and noted they had several calls about that person, but I do not know what the final outcome was.
